Clomiphene Citrate, is it useful to get pregnant?

Clomiphene Citrate What is it?

Clomiphene citrate is an ovulatory stimulating medication that causes the ovaries to produce and release eggs. It is generally prescribed to women who have not managed to get pregnant due to not being able to produce eggs (in 70% of cases it has managed to work and improve ovulation cycles), in addition, it can be prescribed to men with infertile situations. However, this component alone will not work to achieve pregnancy.

If you have tried to get pregnant for some time and have not succeeded, you have likely heard of clomiphene or clomiphene citrate, but it is very important to remember that you do not self-medicate or use it on your own, it is always necessary to go with a doctor before starting any type of treatment or taking any medicine, and particularly in this case, go to a reproduction specialist.

Clomiphene is prescribed in the form of oral tablets and the dose must be what the specialist prescribes, and is generally started 3 to 5 days after the start of the cycle. It should not be taken in a dose different from that indicated by your doctor and its intake should be exactly as prescribed.

Advantages of Clomiphene Citrate

Some of the advantages of using clomiphene as part of assisted reproduction treatment include:

  • Low cost and effective effect, recommended in the initial treatments of women with infertility of different origins, particularly due to “unknown causes.”
  • Simple to administer due to oral intake.
  • In the doses recommended by specialists, few side effects can be noticed.
  • According to the American Society for Reproductive Medicine, the use of this medication is not associated with birth defects.

What are the secondary effects?

Clomiphene citrate can cause multiple effects that can be severe if there is no timely follow-up carried out by a specialist doctor, such as:

  • Hot flashes (excessive heat)
  • Stomach ache
  • Vomiting
  • Pain in the bust
  • Headache
  • Abnormal vaginal bleeding

If you are using this medication as part of your reproductive process, remember that it is essential to attend all appointments with your doctor, since monitoring your body's reaction is vital.

What alternatives are there to get pregnant?

If you have been trying to get pregnant for more than 12 months and have not been able to get pregnant, you are likely facing infertility, which can be treated effectively.

Before considering taking this or any other medication, consult with your reproductive doctor. Keep in mind that the most important thing to achieve a pregnancy is an accurate diagnosis of your fertility situation since the particular treatment you should have will depend on this.
